This is ... what scrambles my brain when I try to understand it

Thanks to Juddie from Flightless Boyds for this week's This Is... theme (and to Angela from Three Buttons for hosting). This week's theme was easy (and it was great to have two to choose from). Whenever anyone asks me what my husband does for work, I have an awful time trying to explain. I basically have a spiel that I recite, that I have learnt by rote, and which I really don't actually understand. Or sometimes I just pop a few words like 'Ethernet' 'D Slams' and 'dark fibre' into my sentences, and once I see the eyes glaze over I know I've explained enough. According to Matt apparently I get a bit overexcited and start throwing in other terms that are not actually anything to do with what he does....but I really like saying 'fibre to the node'. I always feel like pulling a gangsta pose after I've said that one.

It is a running joke at Matt's work that they should just put this sign on their office door and be done with it.

I gotta tell ya, if this cat came to my door selling his internets - I'd buy two!!

That's funny...Mr CP is in IT too and it's impossible to explain what he does all day....that lolcat is a good one!

Hey Bec, great post. I too have no idea how to explain what Mr Jess does... the glazed eyes resonated with me!

So glad to read that someone else can't explain what their partner does. I thought it was just me. I always answer "I don't know" when asked now. It gets me some strange looks, but it gets me off the hook.

You could maybe make copies of that cute cat pic & whip them out of your bag each time somebody asks what your hubby does. You're very entertaining! Thank goodness for that cat pic because I had no idea what you were babbling about. Which made it all the more fun to read anyways :)

Hi Bec,

I had a good laugh over this blog about trying to explain what Matt does. When people ask me what my brother does I soooo have no idea how to explain as I to don't understand it...... I defintely need a copy of your spiel!!!

P.S. Glad to hear that I wasn't alone. I am sure that in a few years our kids will be able to understand and explain it to us a lot better as they will be right into all the latest technology

Yes, I do understand. My dh does long range planning for future satellites, so I just wave my hands in the air and mention 2010 or 2012 and people realize there is no way I can explain it...in regular spoken English.

I would not buy the internet until they offer me the new beta version.

This was my 'brain scrambler' too! though I went for the other theme in the end. I am hopeless and when anyone starts explaining something to me, in my head I just start to go blah blah blah... I just don't GET it... and to be perfectly honest, I really don't care!

That's so funny! We're all like that with my dad's job (also in IT). My brother is the only one that gets it, the rest of us just say that he does "something with computers". Mind you, that's no where near as cool as "fibre to the node" ;)

"Fibre to the node"!!! love it.
Uh, so what's his job title? :P

I love that poster!

Being a bit of a computer geek myself, dark fibre and D Slams sound way cool to me and I'm off right now to google them right now!

Dark fibre either sounds incredibly "Armani" or very much like the strand which knits the axis of evil together! And 'fibre to the node' just adds to the intrigue :)

It all makes your hubby sound very mysterious and interesting.

Great post, made me giggle. :)

That cat is hilarious! Wondering when I can drop 'fibre to the node' into a conversation!

Bec, this post and the comments have had me laughing and laughing! I love that you embellish your descriptions of your husbands job!

That would scramble my brain too!!! My MR HB is also in IT. I have learnt to throw twisted-pair-cat-5-cable-with-RJ45-connector into any casual conversation I have with his friends. They look at me strangely :)

Bec, you'll have to explain to me one day what Matt does for a living. Does he look as cute as the cat? I sure could have done with him on Tuesday when Mr Optus had me tied up in knots, turning the computer on and off, pulling out plugs, counting to 30 and putting them back in, etc, etc, only to discover when I turned on the news in the car later in the morning that it wasn't my computer's fault after all. Sob.
